Joan is a teacher and practitioner of Statistics and Experimental Design specializing in Biostatistics (Quantitative Biology and Biometrics), Biological Surveys, and Environmental Research applications. In parallel with her own teaching and research interests she also consults to other researchers and the mining industry. With the benefit of over 30 years experience in secondary and tertiary education and applied research, and with a love of teaching, she also enjoys assisting students and others with difficulties with applied statistics. She established Stats4us private tuition and short courses in 2006 to address that need. She has an excellent knowledge of the commonly used statistical packages such as SPSS and Minitab and is familiar with the core content of most statistics units currently offered at Curtin, Edith Cowan, Murdoch, and Notre Dame Universities in W.A., at University of Western Australia, and the University of Ballarat and Victoria University in Victoria, Australia.

Joan has a long and proven track record of achievement and integrity in her teaching. Her ability to develop her students’ understanding and skills in statistical applications is due not only to her love of teaching and her strong mathematical background, but equally importantly, her deeply practical knowledge of her subject gained through her many sponsored research projects for mining companies.
The depth of experience, real world examples, and continuing enthusiasm that Joan brings to her teaching are the key to her ability to consistently motivate her students and to inspire them to achieve in their studies. This has been reflected in positive feedback and results received from the many students Joan has taught over the years.
‘Throughout my years of teaching of applied statistics my emphasis has been on conveying to students the relevance of good statistical methodology to their chosen field and giving them the confidence and desire to apply their learning successfully, not only during their study years but also in their subsequent careers.’
Fulbright Teaching Fellow (at Kalamazoo College, Michigan, USA): Over a period of six months in 2001 and 2002.
Winner of Year 2000 Excellence in Teaching Award from Curtin University, Division of Engineering and Science Student Guild. Joan's outstanding past contribution to teaching at Curtin University has also been separately acknowledged.
Adjunct Associate Professor within Department of Environmental Biology, Division of Resources & Environment, Curtin University of Technology : 2006, 2007.
Lecturer and researcher at Curtin University of Technology, 32 years (1974-2005), most recently as Associate Professor in Biometrics, Department of Environmental Biology (1998-2005).
Member Curtin University Academic Board, 1992-1994, 1997-1999.
Director Curtin University Consultancy Services, 1992-1999.

Developed and taught a popular and successful second year Biostatistics course (Quantitative Biology Unit 201) for Curtin University, Department of Environmental Biology, for many years to mid-2004. – That unit continues to be offered at the University and in more recent years was taught for a period by one of Joan’s former students of the course.
Prepared and presented 3-day Short Course in Applied Statistics. - Initially for a Federal Government Department.
Supervised 45 undergraduate and 15 Honours Degree student projects, 5 postgraduates, and two Doctoral students, developing the students’ statistical and experimental design skills, and understanding of the practical applications and research methodologies in the field. Many of Joan’s past students have applied such skills in their subsequent careers in industry.
